Support & Resources
There are a number of resources both on post (campus) and in the local community for VMI cadets and employees related to the work of the IG and Title IX offices.
Bystander Intervention Training (BIT) - Instruction for 4th Class cadets (freshmen) focuses on prosocial helping behaviors and understanding perceptual and environment influences that act as barriers to intervention. Encouraging conversation stimulates cadet self-reflection and serves to communicate shared values of empathy and belonging. Step UP! training provides a framework explaining the bystander effect, reviews relevant research and teaches skills for intervening successfully using the 5 Decision Making Steps, the 5 Ds and the S.E.E.K. Model (Safe; Early; Effective; Kind).
Project Horizon - Project Horizon offers free, confidential counseling for anyone who has experienced sexual or domestic violence. VMI also partners with the organization for various events on post such as events during April as Sexual Assault Awareness Month.
Project Beloved Soft Interview Room - Thanks to Project Beloved, a nonprofit organization based in Texas, the police building at Virginia Military Institute now has a soft interview room that can be used by departments throughout the Lexington-Rockbridge community. The soft interview room at VMI is the 49th in the country, the third in Virginia, and the first on a Virginia college campus. While the room is on VMI’s post, it is available to any law enforcement agency in the area that needs it. (VMI News Release)
