DOI Trainings

The DOI team facilitates a number of trainings throughout the year for cadets, faculty, and staff. This includes not only trainings developed in-house specific to the VMI experience, but also trainings used across the commonwealth and in the larger higher education and military communities around the nation.

These include:

  • peer-led Inclusive Excellence (IE)  training for the Corps of Cadets
  • collaborative IE training with VMI & Lexington police departments

Cadet-Led IE Training

Members of VMI's Corps of Cadets volunteer each year to facilitate the cadet-led training throughout the academic year. The begin the process by attending training sessions with faculty and staff from the DOI Office, as well as representatives from the Commandant's staff.

Cadet facilitators of inclusive excellence training meet in the summer with Maj. Briana Williams.Following their facilitator training, these cadet facilitators lead sessions throughout the fall and spring semesters for the rest of the Corps. Trainings increase awareness of commonalities and differences, explore topics of diversity and inclusion, and seek to increase skills in communicating effectively around challenging topics.

Community Trainings

As VMI is strongly tied to the Lexington community, and cadets, faculty, and staff interact with both the VMI and Lexington police departments, working with these groups on consistency of inclusive excellence training is an important facet of ensuring the mission of diversity, opportunity, and inclusion at the Institute.
