Pre-Professional Program: Law

What is the Pre-Law Society at VMI?

The Pre-Law Society is twofold in purpose: The cadet-run club offers opportunities to learn more about the law, practicing law, and attending law school. The club hosts information panels and coordinates trips to courthouses, law schools, and other events. Second, the Pre-Law Advisor serves cadets seeking to attend law school by assisting with the application process and giving general advice for future applicants. In addition, cadets may join the Phi Delta Phi national honors society.

Are there qualifications or requirements to join?

There are no qualifications required to join the Pre-Law Society. Admission into the Phi Delta Phi Honors Society requires a 3.2 GPA.

What makes a successful law school candidate?

Getting into a good law school is about much more than scoring well on the LSAT and having a good GPA. Over the course of their undergraduate career, cadets will need to participate in activities that will develop their profile, take on roles that define their leadership, take classes that prepare them for the rigors of law school, and develop relationships with faculty and staff in order to receive strong letters of recommendation. Most of all, a successful candidate is one who has the right motivation to attend law school in the first place. The Pre-Law Society and Pre-Law Advisor are great resources to help cadets create a plan and build the strongest possible profile for when the time to apply comes.

Who should I contact if I have questions or want to join?

The faculty advisor for the Pre-Law Society is Maj. Tim Passmore, passmoretj@vmi.edu.
