Marshall Scholarship

Mission

The program is named after a VMI alum, General George C. Marshall, Class of 1901. It was founded in 1953 by the British Parliament as an expression of gratitude for America’s help in the postwar recovery and is designed to strengthen Anglo-American relations by enabling America’s future leaders to study in the UK.

Program Benefits

The program funds up to 50 American students seeking a master’s degree in the UK.  The program covers the cost of tuition, travel, and living expenses for either a one-year or two-year master’s program at any university in the UK. 

Minimum Qualifications

  • US citizen at time of application
  • GPA of 3.7 or above
  • College graduate (you can apply your first-class year or the fall after you graduate)
  • Application requires three letters of recommendation and a letter of endorsement
  • Application deadline is in late September

  • Future-oriented: You need to have clear sense of where you are heading post-VMI
  • Articulate: You need to clearly describe how your prospective program of study builds off of your work at VMI and will prepare you to attain your future goals
  • Sociable: You need to be an ambassador and build relationships with your British peers
  • Committed: You need extra-curricular activities that demonstrate your resolve and leadership skills
  • Informed: You need a historical understanding and appreciation for US/UK relations
  • Service-oriented: West Point (47) and the Naval Academy (32) are both in the top 10 for Marshall Scholarships. The Air Force Academy has had 21 Marshall Scholars.
