Summer Transition Program
Are you ready to get a head start on your cadetship?
The VMI Summer Transition Program is designed to enhance the academic and physical fitness of incoming cadets before they officially matriculate in August. If you’ve committed to joining VMI, this program is for you!
What to Expect:
Academics: Dive into one academic class during the program, which lasts for four weeks during Summer Session II. Get a taste of the rigorous academics that await you, and check a required course off your list.
Civilian Environment: Unlike the Rat Line, there’s no military training during STP. You’ll explore VMI in a civilian setting.
Physical Training: Prepare for the Rat Line’s physical fitness regimen with tailored workouts.
Barracks Life: Live in barracks and dine in Crozet Hall alongside fellow participants.
All individuals who have committed to matriculate at VMI in August are invited to attend STP; attendance is voluntary. Students MUST be admitted, deposited, and cleared all of the medical status requirements before they can pre-register for STP.
NOTE: Admissions will provide a link for STP registration by email with your reservation status confirmation. Please contact admissions (admissions@vmi.edu) if you are a full reservation and have not received this email.
What will I do during the program?
Matriculating students will take one academic class and get to know the VMI post. There are also multiple activities available such as workshops,
Why should I attend STP?
It is highly recommended that a student arrives physically fit for the VMI experience. STP participants will participate in physical training that can help prepare those matriculating in August for the physical fitness regimen of the Rat Line. It also gives attendees a chance to get used to the layout of post, complete a required academic course, and meet cadets and fellow incoming rats before Matriculation Day. Many cadets who attended STP remain close with their fellow participants throughout their cadetships, even becoming roommates later on.
What if I need academic accommodations?
VMI wants new students to succeed. If you need academic accommodations, please notify the Office of Disabilities Services before you arrive for STP.
