Physics Faculty (Tenure Track)

The Virginia Military Institute (VMI) Department of Physics and Astronomy invites applications for a tenure-track position. Preference is at the assistant professor level but qualified applicants at the associate professor level will be considered. The appointment begins August 1, 2022. 

The successful candidate will teach a variety of undergraduate physics courses and laboratories. Additional responsibilities include advising students, engaging in scholarship, mentoring students in undergraduate research and serving on institute committees. Current faculty specialties include astronomy, condensed matter physics, nonlinear optics, nanoscale materials, thin films, nuclear physics and atomic and molecular physics.

Members of the faculty wear uniforms and adhere to military customs and courtesy although military experience is not required. 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • The position requires a Ph.D. in physics.
  • Candidates should demonstrate excellence in teaching, including the ability to mentor undergraduates in research projects, and have an ongoing program of scholarly activity.
