Human Resources Director

Virginia Military Institute (VMI) is accepting applications for a Human Resources Director. Under the direction of the Deputy Superintendent for Finance, Administration and Support, the Human Resources Director is responsible for the efficient and effective operation of the VMI Human Resources Office and supervision of 5 staff members.

Duties:

Overall supervision of the following functions:

Employee relations, recruitment and selection, benefits administration, employee compensation, HRIS reports, EEO compliance, grievance/conflict resolution, and the interpretation of laws, policies and regulations related to the human resources function.

  • Serving as chief human resources advisor for the institution
  • Provides strategic consultation, advice and guidance to senior administration, department managers/supervisors, and employees on human resource issues and policies.
  • Mentors and supports the Human Resources staff and ensures their professional development.
  • Drafts all employment contracts, coordinates employee Visa work, prepares CUPA-HR and AAUP annual salary surveys
  • Prepares annual EOP plan and Workforce Development Plan required by State of VA Dept. of HR Management.
  • Monitors completion of new hire training modules and ongoing employee training in specific areas.

Required Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree in Business Administration, Public Administration or Human Resources Management.
  • Substantial supervisory and high level administrative experience in Human Resources in either public/private sectors, preferably in Higher Education.
  • Knowledge and understanding of legal and statutory issues related to human resources administration, training and experience in a human resources operation, preferably in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
  • Proven ability to work in a team setting and the ability to communicate complex concepts and information to a general audience both orally and in writing.
  • Outgoing and people-oriented with demonstrable management and leadership qualities.
  • Highly skilled in reviewing/interpreting complex human resource related laws and policies.
  • Expert skill in all Microsoft Office Suite products, particularly Excel.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of Ellucian Colleague products, Cardinal HCM and human resources software preferred.
  • Professional human resources certification, PHR minimally; SPHR preferred.
