Maj. Gen. Timothy P. Williams, a native of Richmond, Virginia, graduated from Virginia Tech in 1985 with a bachelor’s degree in management science. A member of the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets, he received his commission as a field artillery officer and began his Army career assigned to the 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment at Fort Bliss, Texas.

Williams left active duty, returning to Blacksburg and joined the Virginia National Guard in 1990 and has since served in a series of key command and leadership positions that include commander of the 329th Regional Support Group, commander of the 1st Battalion, 111th Field Artillery, and G4 Joint Force Headquarters-Virginia.

Williams was selected to serve as the adjutant general of Virginia in May 2014. He is responsible for the combat readiness, administration, and training of more than 9,000 Army and Air National Guard personnel. He is taking a leave of absence from his Department of the Army Civil Service career where he recently served as the director of Training Support and Doctrine for the U.S. Army Combined Arms Support Command.

He earned a master’s degree in management from Webster University in 1989 and a master’s degree in strategic studies from the U.S. Army War College in 2006.
