David L. Miller ’70 retired as president and chief operating officer of Community Health Systems, one of the nation’s leading operators of acute hospitals, in 2016 after 19 years of service. He continues as a retained consultant to CHS. Miller oversaw all aspects of the company’s operating divisions and was charged with managing strategic growth initiatives to achieve clinical, operational, and financial excellence. Miller’s distinguished career spans over four decades and includes executive leadership roles in three publicly traded healthcare companies.

Miller received his bachelor’s degree in economics from VMI. He was a cadet officer and member of the Honor Court. He was listed in Who’s Who in American Colleges & Universities in 1970. He served on the Cadet newspaper staff his 1st Class year and was the advertising manager for The Bomb. Miller earned a master’s degree in business administration from the Darden School at the University of Virginia.

He received a commission in the United States Air Force Reserve in 1970. Following graduate school, Miller served briefly on active duty, and in 1982, he received an honorable discharge from the USAF reserve (inactive) with a rank of Captain.

Miller is a major benefactor of the Boys Home of Virginia in Covington, Virginia and the Union Theological Seminary in Richmond, Virginia. He is also an avid supporter of the Children’s Home in Denton, Texas, Pittsburgh Theological Seminary in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and the Children’s Home in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.
