Scot W. Marsh ’81 earned a degree in civil engineering. As a cadet, he was as a battalion staff officer and served as a member of the Honor Court. Upon graduation, he received a commission as a Combat Engineer in the Virginia National Guard’s 29th Division. He completed the Army Basic Engineer Officers Basic Course, the Engineers’ Sapper School, and Civil Affairs Officers Advance Course and graduated from the Army Parachute School. He served as an instructor on the faculty of the Department of Civil Engineering for two years, teaching Basic Engineering and Surveying at the Institute.

With more than 30 years practicing and teaching land surveying, Marsh is the presiding partner of Marsh & Legge Land Surveyors, P.L.C., a professional company in Winchester, Virginia, founded in 1995 that provides surveying services throughout the Commonwealth, West Virginia, Maryland and North Carolina.

Marsh was appointed to the planning commission for the Shenandoah Valley Battlefield National Park and took part in the drafting of the park plan later adopted by the U. S. Congress to establish the Regional Historic District.

In 1990, he was called to active duty for the Persian Gulf War as a combat engineer captain assigned to a U. S. Army Civil Affairs Command and took part in the liberation of Kuwait City. For his combat service, he was awarded the Army Bronze Star Medal. He retired from the Army Reserve with the rank of Major.
